This book defines the design guidelines to support Health and Well Being in Hospitals. Design-aids, and examples are given to illustrate these guidelines. A building model shows how such a hospital could be realized, highlighting the changes that should be introduced in design for the promotion of Health and Well Being. Design is intended as a general procedure for the production and functional planning of hospitals, where maintenance and management play a relevant role in achieving design objectives. A Roma, all' Ospedale San Giacomo degli Incurabili, il Guaiaco, in considerazione dell'alto costo, veniva distribuito gratuitamente ai malati di Sifilide. Affluivano al S. Giacomo centinaia di malati di sifilide da ogni parte del paese ed in un registro dell'accettazione, conservato nell'archivio storico del S. Spirito, nell'anno 1525 sono segnati circa duemila degenti per la cura diquesta malattia. L'Ospedale curava i malati ma prestava assistenza anche a pellegrini, orfani, poveri, ravvedute, esiliati, vecchi bisognosi e bambini "proietti", ossia i figli di nessuno. L'alto livello degli ospedali di Roma in questo periodo e documentato da quanto scrive Martin Lutero, ospite del convento degli Agostiniani (attuale caserma dei Carabinieri di piazza del Popolo): "In Italia gli Ospedali sono provvisti di tutto cio che e necessario; sono ben costruiti vi si mangia e beve bene e vi si e serviti con sollecitudine; i medici sono abili...Delle gentildonne velate vengono a custodire i malati".
